The lady who seems to have forgotten to age = My mother.

Here’s an anecdote

Once in college, a professor of mine mistook her for me and started yelling at her for having poor attendance.

Psss…parents were summoned in my college for a namesake ‘meeting’ when a student’s attendance fell too low in any semester.

She burst ‘the bubble’ of her age leaving him red-faced.

For her luscious thick jet black hair which she had coloured once but over the course of a year ‘healed’ with organic recipes

To her ‘Churan Chutney Daughter’ – this mask was her favourite and this is what she uses now.

She relies on a secret homemade Ubtan that she has been using daily for over a decade to get stunning skin.

No makeup (except kajal and lip balm)

No regular trips to beauty parlours.

Here’s the recipe that she has guarded for long.

That’s a lady in her late …

Let’s keep it under covers! (I value my life)

Which beauty recipe have you been passed down?

  1. Very useful blog for diy recipes, Nidhal… Keep up the good work and do post more… Btw can you make a post on hair removal methods for face & hands…???

    1. Hi Happy!
      As far as hair removal is concerned, I’ve tried making wax at home which turned out plain useless and all those mix lemon and so and so ingredients DIYs too.

      I feel they’re all just an eyewash. Considering how hair has to be pulled out from our skin to leave it hair less, only something as ‘aggressive’ as waxing (on body) and threading (on face) will work.

      In my opinion, settle for the two instead of making yourself a guinea pig. I’ve tried my hands at a couple of so called hair removal DIYs. None worked.

  2. Hi Nidhal. Do you add curd to the mixture and store it or the hung curd is added to the mix before the application? Please clarify.

    1. Radhika, we prefer normal curd for this face pack.

      The reason being it is watery. So, our final pack turns out of the right consistency – neither too watery nor a thick solid.

      What we do is make a good enough batch of this pack (ours is finely powdered) and store it in an airtight jar.

      Every morning, mom scoops one tbsp of it, adds it to normal curd and tucks it away in the fridge. At night, she takes the mixture out, leaves it for 5 mins so that the chill dissipates and then applies it on her damp face and neck. She doesn’t store it for more than 10-12 hours. We mix the whole thing together once and for all (monring) so that Kesar gets ample time to get released into the pack.

    1. It is absolutely safe for daily use, Juhi. Take care of the weather however. In winters, it’s better to use it in the afternoon. In summers, any time is conducive.

    1. Hey Pooja, yes acne prone skin can easily use this. I suggest you make this in the morning, store it in the fridge and then use it in the evening or at night.

      Why so?

      To help release Kesar’s goodness in the mask. But please no overnight storage. Else all is hunky dory.

    1. This is merely one of those recipes that she uses, Soma. I myself don’t know what all lies in her cupboard. I attribute many to the fact that she never went bananas with products.

      In fact, I remember her telling me that it was on her wedding that she first applied makeup. My nani was very particular about not throwing money of “such stuff”

      Perhaps, Nani’s strictness paid off very well!

    1. On face, 25 to 30 mins and if you’re using it all over your body, then 30-45 mins, Saru.

      Please make sure whatever stock you store in the fridge in the morning gets finished by night.

      This Ubtan isn’t meant to be stored overnight. The reason behind storing it in the fridge in the morning till evening is to allow Kesar to release its goodness.

    1. Sure, Sanchita.

      Curd = 2 tbsp.
      Sandalwood & oats powder = 1 tbsp. each
      Wild turmeric = 1 pinch
      Kesar = 2-3 strands
      Lavender Essential oil = 2-3 drops
